Wild turkey chase
It was a funny old day yesterday. I had the dentists late morning but decided to have a couple of hours down Wyver. A couple of hours that proved very fruitful as on the main pool was an adult Kittiwake. A bird I had long wanted down Wyver. It wasn't there long but that didn't matter, a Kittiwake it was. And the first down Wyver since 1997.
Anyway, as the dentists are in Matlock I decided to have the afternoon at Carsington as I was up that way. I'd been in Sheepwash less than an hour when I got a call from Roger that a visiting birder had reported a Great Grey Shrike between Sheepwash and the brick tower.
I finished my boiled egg and went for a walk. I spent over 90 mins searching all possible areas but saw nothing. The trouble is a lot of these 'visitor reports a bird' sightings end up being a load of crap. I've chased many a reported good bird which turns out to nothing more than a robin. But as always you have to follow them up.......just in case.
I then received further info that the birders' name was Bernard Matthews. Hmmm, surely not. Also that the bird had been on top of a bush then flew away from the res, and in a different location to the one I had been searching.
As it happens, looking at the email that was sent by the finder this record could well be genuine. It's just a pity the original info was duff. Not so effing bootiful!

It makes it all worth while
Any dedicated local patcher will know it can be bloody hard work at the best of times. But, now and again something turns up that makes you think it's all been worth it. Today was one of those days.
Little Gulls are a fairly common passage bird at some of the larger bodies of water in the county. But at Wyver they are as rare as Chris eating a fruit salad. Today however was one of those days. No, not Chris eating a fruit salad.....that would just be ludicrous. But a Little Gull at Wyver.
I was thinking of calling it a day around lunchtime when all of a sudden loads of Gulls started dropping in. Initial scans only produced BH Gulls and Commons. But then I caught sight of an adult Little Gull flying around and feeding as only Little Gulls do. Dipping and surface feeding. Get in! A fucking adult LITTLE GULL.
It's not a rare bird but for Wyvers standards it's a bloody MEGA and the first one there since 2005. All the better that a few birders got down and saw it before it buggered off.
Like I said, it makes it all worth while. I just hope I don't have to wait 9 years for the next one.
