1st winter male Dunnock
I'm probably going to get slated for this post but here goes anyway. If anybody is interested I have a 1st winter male Dunnock visiting the garden. Actually, just looking out the window now I also think there's also a 1st winter female Blue Tit moulting into adult Summer. Exciting stuff! I might put the news out so others can share in my joy.
What! Nobody is interested!? Can't say I blame you really. Just the same as me not being interested in some of the pointless records that I see one the Bird News Services. I'm not blaming the Bird News Services per se (can't believe I've used that, it sounds so pompous) but the observers. Although, in saying that the Bird News Services can be just as guilty sometimes.
I reckon most of the time that people don't give a shit whether It's a 1st winter, 2nd summer male or whatever it is. Just tell us the species and we'll decide if that species is worth going to see. I think I speak for most here but the age or sex of the bird isn't going to sway me into going to see it.
I can understand it with certain species (trying to think of one but can't) where the male for example could be a stonking bird and worth seeing. Maybe Gulls are one instance where ageing could be of interest. Especially with the rarer Gulls.
One particular report I recall seeing a couple of months ago was a 1st winter Waxwing. I mean come on, what is the point of that? Birders aren't going to think 'hmm a 1st winter Waxwing, that's worth seeing'. The fact that it's a Waxwing will be enough. To be honest a lot of the time I think it's birders being clever. Or birders thinking they are being clever is more likely.
There's a report today of a 2nd winter male Hen Harrier in Cheshire. Again I find that a little pointless. Surely just Hen Harrier will do? If somebody can convince me that ageing and sexing even common birds at times is worth it then have a go. I doubt I'll be swayed though. I'm not saying that Hen Harriers are common by the way because I know they aren't. They should be, but aren't.
Like I said before If somebody can convince me that ageing and sexing everything is the way forward then fair enough.

Once Bittern twice Bittern
How often does it happen? You wait years to get a decent bird on your local patch then 2 come along at once. From day one it was suspected that there could be 2 Bitterns but it was only last night that we realised with any certainty that there was indeed 2 birds.
Although I had briefly seen the Bittern over a week ago I really wanted to get a decent view of it and maybe get some photos. Everybody else seemed to be getting good views except me. Last night I saw the one bird fly at the back of the island and drop into the reeds. We managed to get our scopes on it but it was too dark and distant for a photo. Then within a minute or two the 2nd Bittern flew out of the nearby reeds and flew towards the other bird. Unbelievable, and that was the proof that there was 2 birds.
We were down there again this morning but didn't get a sniff in the couple of hours we were there. We disappeared for a few hours and returned to find a couple of birders in the hide watching the one Bittern. We got a scopes on it and watched it for over an hour as it wandered in and out of the reeds at the back of the pool. As dark was approaching we were standing at the gate whilst 3 birders were watching from the hide. Then at 16.15hrs and in good light both Bitterns flew up out of the reeds, flew across the pool and dropped back in opposite us on the far side. One showed for a short while but the other one had disappeared. Then as it was quite dark one of them flew out and towards the top pool where we lost it.
Another good end to the day and topped off by a very good count of 27 Goosanders in the roost.
I took quite a few photos but only one was any good. Although I did take a couple of videos.

Bittern at Wyver
That's one headline I always dreamed that I would make one day but in truth never thought I really would. But because of having no internet I haven't been able to post about it until now. On Dec 20th Chris was going down Wyver and I was due to join him but decided to go on the ale instead. A decision that at the time I regretted.
I was down at my Dad's house having a few beers when my phone rang. When I saw that it was Chris my heart must have missed a few beats as I instantly knew the only reason he would ring me up was because he had found something. Funnily enough I had a feeling he would get something but I wasn't quite expecting what I was to hear next.
When Chris told be he had just had a Bittern fly across the main pool I had mixed emotions. Part of me was a little pissed off knowing that I should really have been there. Yet a part of me was pleased for Chris as behind me he puts in the most time down there. I was also pleased that little old Wyver should get a very good record. Wyver gets a bit of stick for not being the most exciting of reserves but like anywhere patience can often be rewarded.
With Wyver being 'my' patch I was obviously keen on getting Bittern on my Wyver list. Especially as the last record was in 1985. The following day although I was slightly hungover I made it down there for around lunchtime and sat myself in the hide. The Bittern had clearly created a bit of interest as at one point the hide was full. And it's not often you can say that for Wyver.....thankfully. All together I stuck it out for around 4 hours and was also joined by Chris but unfortunately it never showed.
Because of it being Xmas I couldn't get down again until Dec 30th and I assumed it would probably have gone by this time. But to my surprise it was seen the previous day proving that despite the high water levels it was clearly happy here. On the 30th we were there at dawn until around 11.00 but saw nothing.
We planned to go back later to do the roost and did just that. We arrived back on site at about 15.00hrs to find several birders already there. As dusk approached they filtered away leaving just Chris and myself to sit it out in the hide. I was giving up hope when at 16.27hrs and out of the corner of my eye I spotted it in flight behind the island before dropping into the reeds.
That's all I really wanted was a glimpse and the pressure was now off. It does tend to favour the area of reeds to the right of the island for anybody interested. Bittern is my 141st species for Wyver and the 3rd for Wyver following records in Dec 1979 and Nov 1985.

Back by popular demand
Ok, maybe not but I'm back after nearly a fortnight without internet. Although to be honest I was already contemplating having a break from doing my blog but my hand was forced by the lies and ineptitude of British Telecom or Openreach as they like to call themselves.
On Friday Dec 21st I awoke to find that we had no internet. Everything seemed to be OK with the PC so I checked the phone line and found it lifeless. We rang up BT from my dad's house (a pattern that was to become very familiar over the coming days). They said that an engineer could not come out until Dec 28th due to it being xmas. I was slightly annoyed that nobody could come out either on the Friday (21st) or the Saturday (22nd).
But that was the best they could do so there was no point arguing. To be exact they said it would be fixed by 17.00hrs on Fri (28th). That was then extended to 23.00hrs the same evening. The next morning it was still dead. So it was back to my Dad's for another phone call. They apologised and said it would be fixed later that day. But yet again it wasn't.
This went on for 4 days with them saying it would be fixed later that day. Every time we rang we were put through to a call centre in India. I know that's the norm these days but to be honest they haven't got a clue.
Their story kept on changing on a daily basis. We were told several times that the engineers were working on it when they clearly wasn't. We were then told that it was a network fault and they were digging the road up to lay some new cables. At no point did we see any engineers and there certainly wasn't any road digging going on.
The days ticked by and then came new year so it obviously wasn't going to be done over that period. Then this morning almost 2 weeks since it all started I spotted to my amazement a van pulling up outside the house. Not just any van but an Openreach van.
To cut what should be a short story even longer the engineer said in so many words that what we had been told over the phone was a load of old crap. He said that how could they say it was a network problem when nobody had been out to diagnose the problem. He was the first person to have come out in 2 weeks. The problem in the end was that a wire in the box where the phone line goes in had eroded. Within 30 minutes of the engineer arriving the problem was fixed.
So finally after 2 weeks we are back online and we are back to normal. But not before we get in touch with Ofcom.
Finally, I've got quite a bit of catching up to do and will post again later. I also intend to post a 2012 Birding review of all my highlights and lowlights.
