Marsh Harrier at Wyver

After a week in Scotland (which I still need to do a trip report for) I knew it was going to be a culture shock getting back down to my local patch Wyver. But I needn't have worried as this afternoon I finally got a long overdue site tick. I had only been there about 5 minutes when everything went up. Even the 2 Shelduck went up so I knew it was something half decent.

Then from the left hand corner a cream crown Marsh Harrier flew low over the water.....get in! It then quartered the edge of the pool for a few minutes before eventually flying off North. I've been waiting bloody years for that. My 4th in Derbyshire but more importantly my first for Wyver.

Add that to Bittern, 4 Sand Martins and a Swallow then it really was a good afternoon back on the patch. Spot the bird in the uncropped photo.

Going away

I'm off to Scotland in the morning so there wont be any updates until at least Sunday.

Spring snow....a disaster?

I've been thinking now for a couple of weeks about what possible knock on effect all this snow and cold weather could have on our birds. I was thinking primarily about 'our' migrants but our resident breeders will probably suffer too.

By now at Wyver there should be Sand Martins and maybe the odd Swallow whizzing about hawking insects. Chiff Chaffs should be Chiff Chaffing and maybe even Blackcaps should be in song. But alas, it is as most places are, eerily quiet.

And with the weather forecasters predicting this cold spell to carry on throughout April what lies in store for our feathered friends?

With Sand Martins being one of our first migrants to arrive most should by now already be on  their breeding grounds and starting their first broods. But with the birds being in short supply and their food source even more so, first broods are a long way off.

So when they should be on their second broods they will probably be on their first, and so on. That will equate to losing out on 10's of thousands of birds over a breeding season. And it's not just Sand Martins. All Hirundines, Warblers etc would suffer too. Hopefully when Swifts, Flycatchers and our later Warblers return then it's warmed up sufficiently and there's plenty of food for them. Many of these birds are already in decline so this is the last thing we or more importantly they need.

Nobody can predict what will happen but the early signs aren't good. But birds as we know are resilient and have a habit of succeeding against the odds and bouncing back.

Only time will tell!
