Hooded Merganser: HOODED MERGANSER An adult drake was found by Dave Scattergood on the R.Trent by the Trent/Dove Confluence at about 9.45 a.m. this morning-22nd Feb. It is in pristine condition and appears to be wary. It was seen to swim up the R.Dove out of sight beyond the bend in the river when I left at 12.45 p.m. Approach from the Repton-Burton road in Newton Solney. Turn right in Newton Solney into either Blacksmiths Lane or Trent Lane and drive down to River bank where there is parking. If taking Blacksmiths Lane follow round until it meets Trent Lane and turn right onto a rough track to the River. This is a potential new bird for Derbyshire but records of this species are often clouded with the “escaped bird” tag. There have been about 7 or 8 records nationally up to the end of 2012.

The funny things you hear

In birding I've come to know and expect that there are birders at every feasible level. From complete novices who can't tell the difference between an Osprey and a Wren to the 'top boys' who will be able to tell you about every single feather and whether P3 is in moult or whether its scapulars are worn blah blah blah.

I don't claim to be an expert but, on the other hand, I'm also far from a novice. However, we all have to start somewhere and I remember in my early days making a few fuck ups. I started keeping notes on Jan 17th 2002 and some of the earlier logs make for some interesting reading.

My very first entry for a river walk near Bakewell on the afore mentioned date I wrote 'Duck unrecognised, grey body and a brown head (Wigeon)'. I know now that it was a redhead Goosander which looks nothing like a fucking Wigeon. Another entry for early April the same year when we were walking on The Tissington Trail where I thought I saw a Cirl Bunting! Jesus Christ what was I thinking. And I wont mention the Black Grouse and Wood Warbler I had in some nearby woods.

So anyway, all this nonsense got me thinking. Over the years I've spent some considerable time  sitting in hides, whether that be Wyver, Carsington or where ever. And in that time I've heard some classics. Some that make it difficult to keep a straight face, even now.

Here's just a few of them.....oh and if any of these sound familiar to any reader then I hope you bought that field guide I told you to get.

1. Meadow Pipit: At Carsington Water and if the water levels allow there can often be quite good numbers of Meadow Pipits that migrate from the uplands and pass through. A lot of these can stay on through Autumn and into Winter. Quite often these are right in front of Sheepwash Hide. A hide that seems to attract all levels of idiot. These Meadow Pipits have been everything from Corn Buntings, Starlings and Redshanks.

2. Pied Wagtail. Baby Magpie (I shit you not): Yet again at Sheepwash Hide (I told you it had form) and this was several years ago. I remember sitting there minding my own and a few Pied Wagtails were flitting around the shoreline. I think it was an old dear bless her who was watching the Pied Wags and they were both struggling for an ID. And I distinctly remember her saying 'could they be baby Magpies'? Hmmmmm, NO! They are fucking Pied Wagtails. I didn't of course use the rather colourful language. Stick to the knitting, love.

3. Cormorant: The humble Cormorant that every worm drowner in the country wants shot has itself been at the wrong end of ID's. I've heard them called anything from Guillemots, Razorbills to Puffins. Believe me, you are not going to get flocks of these at a reservoir here in Derbyshire. Or even one for that matter.

4. Shelduck: At the Paul Stanley hide (which is very near to Sheepwash Hide) a couple of years ago there was a single Shelduck in front of the hide. Some ducks can maybe be a little tricky, but this was possibly the most easily identifiable duck on the planet, 30 yards away and in good light. So why a couple of birders had to get their field guide out is anybody's guess. Before I put them right it was a Teal, Tufted Duck and a Wigeon. Not much difference between a Shelduck and a Teal, is there?

5. Curlew/Snipe: Whilst in the WLC (wildlife centre) at Carsington I could overhear a couple talking about the Curlew that they were watching. I'd not seen a Curlew that day so I was keen to share in their sighting. I asked them where It was and raised my bins to see a Snipe. 'I can see a Snipe' I said. 'Is it a Snipe, I thought it was a Curlew' he said. The conversation ended as quick as it had started. I really hope that bloke threw his scope in the nearest bin, but I fear not.

6. Water Rail/Moorhen: Again in the WLC and an old chap was asking for help identifying a bird on the island. Nobody was saying anything so I stepped in. 'What's this bird here' he said. 'It's a juvenile Moorhen' I said. 'No it isn't, it's a Water Rail' he said. This went on for a while with him refusing to believe that it was a juv Moorhen saying I've been birding for years and know a Moorhen. Well you obviously don't because that's what It fucking well was.

7.  Pied Wagtail (again): Yet again a single Pied Wagtail was in front of Sheepwash Hide and an elderly couple could not work out if it was an Oystercatcher or a Lapwing. They decided on Oystercatcher because it had no crest. Some people are just beyond help.

8. Redshank/Snipe. I think this was last year at Sheepwash Hide. There was a small group of birders in the hide when I walked in. After a while I asked if there was anything about. 'Yes', one said 'there's small flock of Redshank on the spit'. I'd scanned there once and certainly hadn't picked out any Redshank. I scanned again and picked out several Snipe that I had somehow missed. I said I could see some Snipe but no Redshank. They were adamant that there had been some Redshank. But somehow they had transmogrified into Snipe. Before you reach for the dictionary or ask jeeves, transmogrify means to change shape or form.

9. Great Tit/Green Woodpecker: At the feeding station at the Paul Stanley hide I heard somebody exclaim that there was a Green Woodpecker on the feeders. Thinking this was highly unusual I took a peek to see a Great Tit on the nuts. I think it's time to go, love.

10. And finally, I recall a couple who claimed a Yellow-nosed Albatross at Carsington. Jesus what were you......oh hang on...maybe, just maybe they did.
