Counting Pigeons (again)

As Autumn seemingly turned into Winter overnight as temperatures plummeted I was down the patch on Saturday morning and it was quickly apparent that the Wood Pigeon was going to be the main feature of the day. With my little black book at the ready I started noting down stuff going through. The little black book is a new addition to my birding day. It's something I've noticed recently that maybe because of age I can't remember things like I used to. It's something I've noticed recently that maybe because of age I can't remember things like I used to.

I used to have quite a photographic memory and could quite easily recall all my sightings, and figures too. But alas, not anymore, so the little black book is just as essential to my birding day as my scope and bins.

I still don't know why Wyver can be so good for a bit of vis migging as it sits low down in the valley. Most 'good' vis migging spots are on high ground which is naturally good for passing migrants. All I can think of with Wyver is that the birds come over the moors which are several miles away to the North East and then drop down and funnel down the valley and directly over the reserve. Whatever the reasons days like Saturday and today don't happen very often.

At the weekend I don't think I've ever seen as many Pigeons as I did. They were piling through in flocks ranging from just a dozen or so to several hundred. By the time I had finished I had amassed 3'760. The sort of figure I thought only a well known vis migging site would get. Also the sort of figure I thought would be hard to emulate.

Yesterday however was more of the same. From 07.30 there was an almost constant stream and at times they were difficult to count. There were flocks at the southern end of the reserve, the middle and the northern end, and sometimes at the same time. I did the best I could and ended up with 4'590 but there was probably more. The funny thing was that by 08.30 they had all but dried up and very few went through after that time.

Just when I feel like I'm getting to grips with and understanding the complexities of vis migging I get a day like today. From yesterday's 4'590 Woodies today I had a big fat zero. The only thing I can think of, is that today the wind was coming from the SW so maybe pushing the Pigeons further North.

Where's the justice?

The copper who was convicted of stealing 649 rare birds' eggs has been sentenced. Well, I say sentenced, I wouldn't really call this a sentence. More like getting away with it. Read here.
The fact that he wasn't even jailed and gets to keep his pension is quite scandalous.

Copper, Copped!

Copper stole rare birds' eggs.
This lowlife obviously thought he was above the very law he was supposed to uphold. It's a pity the twat will still get his pension. He must have known what was coming when he retired just 2 months after his arrest. Why isn't there something in every police officers' contract that if they breach it it any way they will lose their right to a pension. Read about it here.

Goodbye Ceefax

Most of us of a certain age will have spent many an hour watching the latest football scores coming through on Ceefax on the BBC. Or if we was really desperate then Oracle on ITV. These days the kids don't know they're born and most of us will at some point have seen Jeff Stelling and the boys on Sky Sports. Or if you haven't got Sky and you feel like life isn't worth living you can press the red button and get Garth Crooks.

And I even remember having to go shopping sometimes on a Saturday afternoon with my old mam god bless her and would stop outside Dixons for a quick look at Ceefax and the latest scores. The selling points of TV's these days are a bit different. They've got Freeview, Freesat, WifFi, 3D, Internet, LED, Blu-Ray etc. Back then it was 'has it got Ceefax?' 'If so, we'll 'ave it'.

Every town and city will have at least one Sports Bar so there really isn't any excuse.
It's all just so easy . And if you can't find a TV then you've got mobile phones, ipads, tablets etc. Or is the ipad a tablet? I'm not sure, I still haven't fully grasped modern technology and the latest gadgets.

I have fond memories of watching the scores come in with my Dad.....well memories anyway. I recall the anticipation waiting for the page to change hoping your team had scored. My Dad was more of a Ceefax addict that I ever was. He even used to watch Cricket. Many will say Cricket is already a tedious sport but you try watching it on bloody Ceefax. I guess we have to move with the times but I for one will miss waiting an age for the page you want to come round.

To those of you with fond memories of Ceefax then this is for you.

Joan Palmer' s poem to Ceefax

Badger cull delayed

The government has announced it will delay a planned cull of badgers in England until next summer, after widespread protests against the scheme.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said this was necessary to "get it right" and the "optimal time" for this year had passed.

Under the coalition's plans, several thousand badgers could be shot by trained marksmen, in an effort to reduce levels of bovine tuberculosis.
Opponents say this is unnecessary.

Ministers have given approval for a cull in two areas, Gloucestershire and west Somerset, as part of efforts to control bovine TB.
Under the plans, badgers will be shot in the open without first being trapped in cages, which is current practice.

Opponents, including the RSPCA, say that is inhumane. An e-petition to the government, created by Queen guitarist Brian May, has attracted more than 160,000 signatures.
'Convinced'

In a statement to MPs, Mr Paterson said the cull "should have begun" earlier this summer but had been delayed until after the Olympics and Paralympics, with recent bad weather also hampering preparations.

But he said that the alternative - a vaccine - was only 50% to 60% effective, adding: "I'm entirely convinced that the badger cull is the right thing to do."

The NFU is leading the preparations for the scheme, but Mr Paterson said it had written to him, asking for a delay, as this was not the best time of year to go ahead.
But he said: "It's crucial that we get this right."

The government's plan is based on the results of a nine-year trial which showed the spread of the disease could be slowed slightly if more than 70% of badgers in an area could be eradicated. But if it was less than 70%, the spread of TB could increase, it found.

Manic Monday

I must admit to being a tad jealous of those who witnessed the huge fall of migrants along the east coast today. From Suffolk up through Norfolk, Lincs and into Yorks some of the figures were mind blowing. Spurn for example is a well known migration hot spot but even the regulars there could not have predicted what was witnessed today. This is Spurn today. I think you'll agree that those figures are quite phenomenal.

Counting Pigeons

Much to the dismay of Chris who still takes the piss out of the fact that I actually count Pigeons, today I did precisely that......count Pigeons. Not just Pigeons though! When it comes to vis migging this year cant compete with the dizzy heights of last Autumn and although today did start off quite promising it didn't really turn out as I had hoped.

I was greeted with thick fog when I arrived down Wyver at 08.00 and despite this almost immediately I had 10 Meadow Pipits go through. I thought that this was going to be the start of a real good vis migging session, but alas it wasn't....apart from the Pigeons.

I was only getting a few small flocks of Pigeons go through whilst it was foggy but as soon as it lifted they started piling through. I'm guessing that the foggy conditions had grounded them and when it lifted it gave them the green light.

The funny thing though is that the majority went through in about a 20 minute period and then it all dried up again. At first I had a flock of c250, then other smaller flocks with birds eventually totaling 781. Only Pigeons but not a bad haul. Despite getting those 2 Meadow Pipits through at the very start I only got another 2 over the next few hours. I did have 22 Skylarks through including a flock of 15 which is my best count of the Autumn so far.

Discuss Fuscus

It looks like the probable Fuscus that's been at Carsington for the past week or so is in fact just an intermedius.

The complete moult has progressed far too much, with P1-3 new, a gap showing there is active moult and only a few retained outer primaries. This is more in line with intermedius. Jonsson in BW decsribed the 'safe zone' as P1, at most P2 replaced and moult then suspended prior to migration. So, good but not good enough! (The Jonsson reference is Birding World Sept 1998.) Incidentally the only identifiable age class for ‘fuscus’ is 2nd calendar year, primarily based on moult.

No, I don't know what it all means either.
This is the bird in question

Purple patch continues

Derbyshire isn't exactly known as being a mecca for birding, but this, even by Derbyshire's standards has been a very average year. This autumn has been one of the worst I can remember for return passage. Hardly a single notable Wader has passed through the county throughout August and September.

However, amidst all the doom and gloom I personally have had a very good month. There is always an element of luck when It comes to birding and being in the right place at the right time certainly helps. Whether by luck or by judgement I certainly have been in the right place at the right time on more than one occasion.

I guess by putting yourself out there you are always going to increase your chances of seeing something half decent. Like my now deceased Gran-dad used to say to me. 'If you want to win the raffle you have to buy a ticket'.

It all started back in late September when I was fortunate to see the Great White Egret at Carsington. Just getting my gear out of the car and looked up to see it flying past. I saw it for about 3 seconds and it wasn't seen again. If that's not being in the right place at the right time then I don't know what it is.

Then 5 days later I was standing on Stones Island when the 4 adult Arctic Skuas flew past. A trip to Norfolk only whetted my appetite for more.

Post Norfolk I had a site tick at Wyver when early one morning I had 2 Woodcocks. A week on and again a bit of stuff at Carsi.....Grey Plover, 11 Common Scoter and 4 Scaup.

Then yesterday the Grey Phalarope at Carsington which is still there today. Another site tick today at Wyver when during the vis mig I had a Rock Pipit over. I'm surprised I've not had one before to be honest although with there only being one previous record way back in 1974 then maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

And If you was to count some good vis migging days at Wyver, Rock Pip at Carsi then this Autumn hasn't been that bad after all.

From mundane to magic

You'll often hear birders mutter the words 'it only takes one bird'. Today, never a truer line has ever been spoken. With the blustery conditions we are currently experiencing there's always a good chance of something turning up and as usual for a Wednesday I arrived at Carsington, but maybe with higher expectations than normal.

I wont bore you with what I did have but needless to say it wasn't very exciting. The usual killer Yellow-legged Gull and a female Pintail being the best. Mid-afternoon, however, whilst sitting in Sheepwash Hide I was scanning through the Gulls which had started to build up pre-roost.

Apart from the odd Common Gull it was as usual Lesser Black Backed Gulls dominating. As I scanned towards Sheepwash Spit something much smaller caught my eye behind the Gulls. Bloody Hell! It's a Phalarope! As usual when I see a 'goodie' I went into panic mode. Torn between getting enough on the bird to ID it, just enjoying what was my first Phal' in Derbyshire, and last of all getting the news out.

It was quite choppy out on the water so at times I couldn't even see it but I got enough and was fairly sure It was a Grey Phal as the bill looked quite thick.  A 1st winter at that due to the pale back and darker wings.  I made a couple of phone calls and sent a few texts whilst keeping my eye on the bird. Eventually I lost sight of it and panicked slightly as I knew a couple of birders were on their way.

It then reappeared briefly before flying round the spit and into Brown Ale Bay. Chris and myself decided that the best option was to walk around to the new path. We passed Richard (RJL) who when told of the Phalarope decided that it was a much better option than doing the Gull roost so walked round with us and for the next 40 minutes or so we had good views. Mark (MAP) arrived and was watching it from further down the new path. The bird then flew back towards Sheepwash where again we had decent views together with John (JB) before it yet again flew around the spit and out of view. A brilliant end to a very average day. I tried to get a few photos but it was next to impossible trying to digiscope something that small, at that distance and often in choppy waters.

Luckily, Richard managed to get some video footage which I have hopefully included here. Many thanks, Richard. Also included is a photo, again courtesy of Richard.
